In the community game we base the RTP on suspected concussion rather than an actual diagnosis. This is based on the ability to effectively and actually diagnose/confirm a concussion. So we take a precautionary approach aligned with national guidelines.
If a player experiences one or more sign or symptom of concussion then the player MUST be removed from play and go through the RTP. The player should get seen by a HCP to confirm there are no other issues, however this doesn’t clear them to go back to play straight away. Appreciate that this (in many cases) is a precautionary measure but it must be followed, especially with children.
A knock to the head doesn’t equal concussion, but also remember that only 10-15% of concussions result in a loss of consciousness...there are a number of less subtle signs/symptoms.
Appreciate that this is a ‘grey’ area. Every case should be approached on an individual basis using a precautionary approach and following the RTP where appropriate.
Remember that there is Return to Play programme and ALL players MUST follow this after a suspected concussion. Adult-19 days (min), U19s and below-23 days (min).
