Remembering Viv Barley | 1943–2026 | YRFU Past President 2008-2009

It is with great sadness that West Park Leeds RUFC shares the news of the passing of Viv Barley, Honorary Life Member, who died on Thursday 3rd September following a nine-week stay at St Gemma’s Hospice.

Viv was one of the central figures in the formation of Leeds Rugby Union in 1992, and played an important role in the merger that created West Park Leeds RUFC in 2006.

Over many years, Viv served on the committees of Headingley FC, Leeds RUFC and West Park Leeds RUFC, embracing the club's development and the progress made along the way.

He also served on the Yorkshire RFU committee and as President, a role which gave him the honour of officially opening our new clubhouse at The Sycamores on 30th August 2008.

Born in Guiseley in 1943, Viv lived with his wife Cheryl in Roundhay for more than 45 years. A respected teacher who went on to become a headmaster, he leaves behind his wife Cheryl, sons Jonathan and Matthew, daughter Eleanor, and many friends across Yorkshire.

His contribution to rugby in Leeds and Yorkshire, and particularly to the story of West Park Leeds, will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts are with Cheryl, Jonathan, Matthew, Eleanor and all of Viv's family and friends at this very sad time.
